Newark Reading Is Fundamental
Newark Reading is Fundamental (RIF) has been a part of Protestant Community Centers, Inc. (PCCI) for 25 years.  Newark RIF is the oldest and largest RIF site in New Jersey and has been consistently rated as one of the best RIF programs in the United States.

This past year, 40,000 new books were distributed to more than 10,000 children. PCCI also distributes 10,000 gently used books throughout the City. Every child benefiting from RIF now has a library card and received dozens of extra books donated by churches and community groups from around the state.

In addition, thanks to the raised awareness of the Newark Reading Is Fundamental program, organizations and individuals from around the state continue to donate slightly used books for distribution to children through the Newark Public Schools and PCCI's various literacy venues. We received 3,000 such donations last year and look for as many as 5,000 books this year.

Sorting and distribution of books provide wonderful one-time volunteer opportunities for groups ranging from Brownies to corporations performing community service.
Currently, PCCI is sponsoring a national pilot RIF program involving 200-250 middle and high school aged students who manage a Reading Is Fundamental program of their own, developing reading motivational activities, learning project management, budgeting, choosing appropriate books and reading with elementary students on a weekly basis.
